This is Ptelea trifoliata, also known as Hoptree, Stinking Ash, and Wafer Ash. This can be trained as a shrub or tree depending on what you are looking for in your butterfly garden.This shrub likes to live in light shade and has nice green blossoms in the middle of the Summer. In 19th century Texas, German immigrants used the seeds from this tree to brew beer. They had no hops so they used this trees seeds as a substitute and that is how this tree got its common name, hoptree.
