This is Ochna serrulata, also known as small-leaved plane, carnival ochna, birds eye bush, Mickey mouse plant, and Mickey Mouse bush. This plant usually grows as a shrub, but if trained it can grow into a small tree which would be at most about 6 feet high. This striking shrub likes to live in lightly shady conditions and will bloom from late Spring until early Summer where it will attract a variety or birds, bees, and butterflies. During the Spring this plant starts out with bright yellow blossoms, which are wonderfully fragrant, and then after the fruit starts popping up the flowers turn into a deep red and the tiny fruits turn black making the whole blossom look like a black and red Mickey Mouse head. Although this shrub prefers a light shade, it is very adaptable and can live in full sun as well. This is a larval host plant for the Karkloof Emperor, and Marieps Emperor butterflies. USDA Hardiness Zones 9b to 11.
