This is Magnolia grandiflora, also known as Southern Magnolia, and bull bay. Growing to over 40 feet tall these majestic trees have left me staring straight up into one with my jaw dropped and my mind absolutely flabbergasted. The geometric patterns are so interesting, and among this intricate lattice work of branches hang proud and beautiful white blossoms. The air smells like an expensive perfume and the moment sweeps me away. Magnolia grandiflora is a larval host plant for the Great Jay, and Common Jay butterflies. USDA Hardiness Zones 6 to 10.
