This is Panax quinquefolius, also known as American ginseng. These herbs grow to about a foot and a half high and like to live in full shade. This highly sought after plant blooms from late Spring until early Summer, and the flowers are followed by bright red berries which the birds just love. This is an endangered species in many areas. The roots are edible and can be candied if that is preferred. The leaves and roots both are used to make tea. USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 7
