This is Strelitzia nicolai, also known as Giant Bird of Paradise, Natal Strelitzia, Wild Banana, and Wild Strelitzia. This is one of the very few plants which have been verified to contain the pigment bilirubin, which is usually found in animals. This plant prefers to live in full sun to bright shade and can tolerate a light frost. This plant can be grown inside to protect it from any hard frost, and then it can be moved outside in the Spring where the birds, bees, and butterflies can take advantage of it. This normally blooms from late Spring until the middle of the Summer. USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 11
